Maggie Gyllenhaal Breast Feeding

Breast feeding is natural. Naturally disgusting in public. It may be a beautiful act of caring and nurturing, but the bottom line is, If I was innocently feeding a starving prostitute a protein shake, I would be arrested for indecent exposure and public indecency.

Alright, so it isn’t nearly the same circumstance, but why wouldn’t Maggie Gyllenhaal use a blanket to cover up the breast feeding? It’s only decent…

Here is the full version:

here’s an idea: if you’re so disgusted by a mother feeding her child then don’t post pics of it on your website.

Derek Hail May 7, 2007 at 5:00 pm

Eh, this is a celebrity gossip site… I’m reporting!

Jenny May 7, 2007 at 5:38 pm

Next time you have to eat, why don’t you try doing it with a blanket over your head. Or better yet, when you see a nursing mother while out in public, go ahead and cover your head with that blanket so you don’t have to see it.

Roni May 7, 2007 at 5:50 pm

Um, is she flashing anymore cleavage than she would be on the red carpet?!?! I think NOT! In fact…I’ve seen far more indecency on the red carpet than this. It’s a freakin’ baby! Let him/her eat.

lorien May 7, 2007 at 6:05 pm

I’m curious, Derek. What is so disgusting about it?

Elaine May 7, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Odd. I always thought using boobies for their actual purpose was normal. I don’t think “disgusting” when I see this photo, I think, “Rock ON! Another mama doing exactly what she’s supposed to do with those silly things! YAY!”

Grow up, little man. It’s ok for boobs to be used for something OTHER than your pleasure.

HateIdiots May 7, 2007 at 6:25 pm

They’re used for a reason you idiot. They were made to provide food, not for YOU to ogle.

Sunshine May 7, 2007 at 6:29 pm

Disgusting? Part of her flesh is disgusting?!? You must be gay, right? Wait, I know gay men who don’t even mind seeing a little boob! And you are how old? Wow the mindset of an “adult” is so overwhelming! You wrote the wrong words because many people, men and women don’t see anything wrong with something so natural!!

Derek Hail May 7, 2007 at 6:36 pm

Whoa… breasts weren’t made for men? :-p

Wednesday May 7, 2007 at 7:23 pm

I’m a woman who believes in breast feeding BUT I also think that there’s something called DISCRETION. If you must breast feed in public, please use a blanket or something else to cover up with. I know this must seem like a foreign concept to the radical, militant feminists who think that they should be able to flash their breasts anywhere, but what happened to a little common courtesy?

Chelly May 7, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Grow up and get some therapy – you obviously need it… and perhaps you should look into that whole “gay” thing, because if you find a breast so gross – I think you’re on your way to admiring mens hairy flat chests!

Jen May 7, 2007 at 8:33 pm

“Eh, this is a celebrity gossip site… I’m reporting!”
This isn’t gossiping, you are putting down.

This is beautiful. She is giving her baby the most precious gift of life and love. It’s hot under a blanket…have you tried to eat with one over your head? and no…breasts weren’t made for men, men made them sexual objects.

Go Maggie!!

Derek Hail May 7, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Whoa, Jen… Men made them sexual objects? How about the women who get them enlarged for attention? That is the fault of man?

laurieann May 7, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Maggie is not flashing (like Britney, Lindsay, Paris, etc.) she’s feeding her child the way nature intended. Indecency is in the eye of the beholder and if you don’t like it—don’t look! This goes for all people who are in the presence of a breastfeeding woman. Go Maggie!

Danica May 7, 2007 at 10:09 pm

I am glad to see a celebrity breastfeeding in public! It sends a good message. Hopefully more moms will see this and not be afraid to breastfeed their babies in public. And Derek…if you think it is disgusting, then why on earth did you post it on your page? lol.

Kay May 7, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Try telling my son to keep a blanket over his head. He won’t – he pulls them right off.

There’s nothing more exposed there than there would be if she were wearing a bikini, and I”m pretty damned sure you’d be calling her hot in that case. The only reason guys have a problem seeing a baby on a boob is because it reminds them that sex produces babies. Major turnoff, so you feel like you’ve got to put moms down for doing what the damned things were intended for.

Christian May 7, 2007 at 11:10 pm

I don’t find it disgusting. It is a picture of a mom smiling at her kid while she eats. I frankly am surprised that a baby eating in public is now top celebrity news. What did you find disturbing about it?

sk May 8, 2007 at 1:38 am

Report this! You’re an A- HOLE!

tess May 8, 2007 at 5:44 am

Oh, I am so relieved to see those comments after reading Derek’s nasty remark. I think all people who slam women breastfeeding in public are hypocrites. They don’t bat an eyelid at any other exposed breast and suddenly the best use of all is being criticised? Breastfeeding women are nothing but discriminated in America, something I cannot understand as this is the best way of feeding a baby. Any celebrity, who sets this positive example should be praised. Go Maggie!

And you, fake puritans go and blanket cover your ass!

david10006 May 8, 2007 at 8:37 am

sorry but this is not a “disgusting” sight, it’s pretty nice really. hell..if i could,i would high 5 the kid!

Derek Hail May 8, 2007 at 9:04 am

high 5 him for what?

cookie May 8, 2007 at 10:08 am

At Derek Hail:

“Whoa, Jen… Men made them sexual objects? How about the women who get them enlarged for attention? That is the fault of man?”

ANSWER: Yes.

Lisa May 8, 2007 at 10:33 am

Derek — thank you for posting such a beautiful picture of this wonderful mom. Do your knuckles still graze the ground when you walk upright?

Jill May 8, 2007 at 10:41 am

This picture is awesome! Derek is obviously looking to generate controversy by posting that he thinks it’s gross. No one could be that big of an asshat.

Feed on, Mama!

Katie May 8, 2007 at 10:42 am

You should ask YOUR mother I bet she breastfed you….and probably in public for the whole world to see. God forbid you ever have kids with a woman who breastfeeds you’ll end up with a divorce because she will discust you 8-12 times a day. Next time you eat your lunch go stick your head under a blanket and see how you like it!!

Erica May 8, 2007 at 10:58 am

There is a difference in feeding a child a cumming in a whore’s mouth you sick freak!

Kandice May 8, 2007 at 11:06 am

The only thing I find disgusting about this is that you would post that it is disgusting. That is what God gave them to us for, not for your pleasure or distaste. Grow Up!!!

Kandice May 8, 2007 at 11:12 am

oh and by the way, do you just realize you just called breastfeeding women child molesters by comparing it to a sexual act (by the way I am glad you admitted to only being able to get it from a prostitute on the street), but it is hardly the same thing you ASS HAT!!! You may be reporter, but you are a VERY uneducated one.

Erica May 8, 2007 at 11:14 am

OMG Kandice! You crack me up!

MrsG May 8, 2007 at 11:24 am

Seriously, what is the problem with this picture? Would you prefer her baby to be screaming because it is so hungry? Then you would post to say that she is starving her child. Breastfeeding is a woman’s right and it’s wonderful that a celebrity can show the world that it’s okay. I think that Maggie Gyllenhaal is a wonderful role model, and girls all over the world should look up to her. It’s better than looking up to the skanks that are admired such as Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan. Way to go Maggie!!!

MrsG May 8, 2007 at 11:26 am

You rock Kandice!

MrsH May 8, 2007 at 12:51 pm

No one has a problem looking at the pictures in National Geographic – they are hailed as excellence in photojournalism…but you see an American celebrity doing the same thing and she’s disgusting? So are we too good to feed our children the way God intended? Have all our advances made us so shallow that you can degrade the most natural behavior there is? If you really need attention try saying something positive instead of denigrating a woman for being a mother to her child.

Luci May 8, 2007 at 1:02 pm

I’m sorry, but only an immature, uneducated, narrow-minded ape could look at that picture and think it’s disgusting. It’s people like you that give breastfeeding the unfair stigma that it has in this country. Grow up. Please.

TreeHugR May 8, 2007 at 2:34 pm

I love all these chicks sqwauking in with cries of “foul, bad, uneducated, ape, man, @$$h0le, etc.” Nothing like giving a blogger exactly what they need, lots of hits with a controversial post. Sheep, nothing but a bunch of predictable sheep. I say, “woo-hoo, more topless chicks in public. Breastfeeding, manfeeding, dogfeeding, whatever. Let them sweater puppies free!”

Pat May 8, 2007 at 2:50 pm

I’m so sorry for you, Derek. I breastfed my four children and now we find that bf’ed children have a 0% chance of getting childhood Leukemia. They were all, and still are, quite healthy and my two daughters are now bf’ing their babies. It took only a few years to turn a beatiful event into something “nasty”. It took over 50 years to discover that Dr. Spock was wrong. La Leche League, fortunately, never went away and now we’re finally getting back to where we should be. Poor Derek; you will have to suffer through watching you children suffer with numerous problems throughout their lives because you think breastfeeding is disgusting. Fortunately, your children may be the last generation force-fed the b.s. of the pharma industry.

Derek Hail May 8, 2007 at 2:54 pm

I never said I was against breast feeding… I said I prefer not to see it in public.

Radicalmilitantfeminist May 8, 2007 at 3:05 pm

And that includes women who (we won’t name names, that wouldn’t be polite) say that they believe in breastfeeding, but in the same breath say “if you must breastfeed in public….”.

Pat May 8, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Then do not look. Our grandmothers were nursing in public. It was perfectly acceptable because only the wealthy could afford not to. But then, they got wet-nurses (women who were lactating and could provide milk for the new baby). Relax, hon. You’re just not used to it. I think I can safely predict that public breastfeeding will become the norm in by 2020. If I can get used to those enormous earlobe holes, you can get used to public breastfeeding. And you’re a reporter; be objective. :)

Pat May 8, 2007 at 8:02 pm

…oh, and I think your words were a bit stronger than you “prefer not to see it in public.” In your own words, you said that it is “[n]aturally disgusting in public.” But I do understand. People looked at me cross-eyed when they realized what I was doing even though I had become so adept at “hiding” it. They behaved as though the act itself was disgusting. Now that laws had to be passed to protect breastfeeding mothers and medical evidence has shown how detrimental formula-feeding is to babies, the general public has reluctantly accepted that breastfeeding is here to stay. Just as people needed retraining to accept non-Whites and non-heteros, it will take some retraining to accept that breastfeeding in public is perfectly acceptable and beautiful, not just relegated to the wonderful masterpieces in museums. You’ll be fine. Just realize that public fellatio will never have the same acceptance as public breastfeeding, as much as you want it to be otherwise. If you were to be honest with yourself, you could never consider your member to be aesthetically pleasing even if it is occasionally useful. A woman’s breast is always otherwise (why else would most of today’s trucks have feminine curves?) :) ;

Corina May 9, 2007 at 12:34 am

OK, you IDIOT, looks like you have never left this country!! Go to Europe! you see breastfeeding moms WITHOUT blankets covering anything and guess what? people don’t mind! Guys don’t think that seeing a mother feeding her baby in public is a “turn on” since they can see breasts (naked) on every beach or public garden or the coed saunas. What’s the big deal? She is doing with her boobs what they were meant to do!! Did I mention Africa? There, women also run around with their boobs exposed!! Remember? Boobs = Food for baby! Men like you want me to lock up my daughter!! Uneducated and sexually UNHEALTHY.

Pat May 9, 2007 at 1:54 am

Now, ladies, please remember that people need to be re-educated. It wasn’t too long ago that men believed that if a woman said “no,” she really meant “yes.” Now most men know better thanks to education. It has taken a lot of work on our parts, but it is work that has paid off. Attacking men for being ignorant is unhealthy as well. You make it more difficult for those of us who are genuinely interested in intelligent discourse to do so because ad hominem attacks do little to educate the “idiot” who you are trying to educate.

Please let us show off the intelligence that we so obviously have since we chose to breastfeed our beautiful children when it was, and still is not, the popular thing to do. This gentleman needs information, not attacks, and as breastfeeding women — past, present, and future — we have an obligation to provide that information. He has been educationally retarded by society; let us treat him as we would any handicapped soul.

Cyndi May 9, 2007 at 7:50 am

I just wanted to be the first to thank you for opening my eyes. I used to be very discreet when I would breastfeed my daughter or have a bottle of breastmilk ready. But your article truly helped me realize that there is nothing wrong with it. You’ve just pissed off probably every mom and/or women who have read this article. But that’s okay, because I’m sure now that your article has been read, you’ll be seeing alot more breastfeeding in public. Thank You.

Cyndi May 9, 2007 at 7:52 am

I will for now on, have no problem breastfeeding in public.

Kaitlyn May 9, 2007 at 10:09 am

Derek get over yourself, if you weren’t “against” breastfeeding why do you post this article? Not to mention you then go on to compair breastfeeding with your own sexual pleasure. Oddly I doubt many prostitutes are starving, even if your the only one paying them and getting a half price discount

Mary-Helen May 9, 2007 at 2:55 pm

Yup, tell my baby to leave a blankie on her head when she wants to eat, because she wouldn’t.

Also, how about you go and eat in the bathroom with a blanket over your head? Maggie is using her boobs for their designed purpose, you’re just pissy because she’s got Ramona (smooth journalism asshat, Maggie Gylenhaal’s baby IS A GIRL!!!) attatched to her boob so you can’t just oggle her like you want to without being a sick f***. Grow up you puritanical moron.

Also, way to point out you can only get it from hookers. After all, what woman would sleep with you unless she was getting something out of it, God knows pleasure wouldn’t be it.

jonny May 9, 2007 at 11:36 pm

I think its hot, wiht a hunt of innocence

jonny May 9, 2007 at 11:38 pm

I think its hot, with a hint of innocence

Aja May 12, 2007 at 10:24 pm

making love with your husband is beautiful too, so why not do that out in the open? How about giving birth in the park? If it is so beautiful and special, why isn’t it done discretely????? use a blanket at least. It’s kinda sick to do that out in the open. you know there are pervs out there? I think these women get horny doing this. It’s N-A-S-T-Y

Aja May 12, 2007 at 10:29 pm

if it’s so nice, do it indoors you freaks!!!! plus, it is ahealth hazard. My hubby liked to squeeze my nips and drink from the faucet if ya know what I mean, and lemme tell ya, THAT SHIT SQUIRTS REAL FAR- IF I HAD AIDS IT COULD SHOOT OVER IN SOMEONE’S DINNER!

Lee May 15, 2007 at 1:26 pm

Allow me to be the first male to post without making a stupid sexualised comment. I honestly think it’s terrible ignorant and illogical on your part Derek to be disgusted by such things. You should really question why you are disgusted, if you did, you would realise that there is really no logic behind it at all. Feel free to justify it to me if i’m wrong.
This is what breasts are for, they are not there for sexual purposes, they are there to feed a baby. I say we best use them, because nature’s way is usually the best way, and we’ve been using breasts to feed children since the earliest man walked the earth.
Again, I must stress the need for logic in everything. If you can’t back up your opinion with reason then don’t express it!
Maggie is quite the most lovely woman i’ve ever set eyes upon, and I find it very charming to see her connecting with her child in such a way. First she was brave enough to make her opinions known about the U.S’ part in 9/11, and now this. Keep up the good work, I say. Lest you Americans forget your beloved constitution and democracy!
