Cory Lidle, a pitcher for the New York Yankees, died yesterday in a plane crash. Shortly after Lidle issued a distress call from his private, 4 seat jet, he crashed into a Manhattan residential apartment building. Lidle ,who just recently purchased his private jet in September, was mocking safety concerns of flying an aircraft by himself. According to People,
During an interview with the paper, the baseball player brushed off safety concerns about his new hobby. “The whole plane has a parachute on it,” Lidle said. “Ninety-nine percent of pilots that go up never have engine failure, and the 1 percent that do usually land it. But if you’re up in the air and something goes wrong, you pull that parachute, and the whole plane goes down slowly.”
I guess he was part of the small percentage of pilots that have engine failure and fly a plane into a building. Although this is a tragedy, what did he expect? He completely down played the dangers of flying an airplane. This leads me to a similar situation that occurred on July 4th with a friend of mine. He proceeded to tell me, “Hey if you explode a thunderbomb in your hand it wont hurt, only if you close your hands.” He proceeded to explode the pack of thunderbombs in his hand, one of which jumped up and hit him in the eye. He was in the hospital that evening and the moral of the story is, don’t explode things in your hands.

Why are you being so flippant about this? Two people died. He may have made public comments about the safety of helicopters, and he may have been wrong or right but that doesn’t mean he deserved it.
I’m not necessarily being negative. I feel bad for his loss, but, he was warned by several people the dangers of flying, especially with so little experience.
He made the decision to fly, despite the warning, and he just wasn’t ready yet.
Anyone who flies knows that there are certain dangers inherent to this type of activity. Is that reason for not doing it? Absolutely not. There are dangers involved in many activities (i.e. driving, skiing, etc.) – one simply has to learn to adequately manage the danger. By the way, just for the record, Cory’s plane was not a jet…it was a piston engine, propeller driven aircraft.
Yea, it wasn’t a jet, thanks for pointing that out!
but ofcourse there are inherent dangers with everything, but don’t you think he should have had a little more experience flying the plane? Its not like riding a bicycle…
Possibly…however, he did have an instructor with him who should have been able to handle this type of aircraft. Perhaps the investigation will show that there were causes beyond either pilots skill level.
I guess we will find out with time
Thanks for getting back to me Derek. I did some half-assed research and learned that flying in a small private aircraft is statistically safer than driving a motorcycle, but not safer than driving a car. I was under the impression that it was safer than a car.
Anyway you will love Choopa. They have excellent customer service and my site is so fast and stable now.
Great, That makes me extremely excited. Choopa seems like a great choice, although ever since my stuff has migrated over, my content column now seems wider for some reason and I havent been able to figure out why lol.
